Federal Government Urges ASUU Members to Consider Farming as Alternative Profession

The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba has urged members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to leave the teaching profession and consider going into farming, stressing that more farmers are needed in the country. Also, in preparation for the reopening of schools, Nwajuiba said some of the modalities that have been put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19 will include afternoon classes in order to prevent overcrowding. Nwajuiba who was a guest on a television programme in Abuja yesterday, reiterated that all schools must enforce the COVID-19 protocols. He said: “Some people may not believe what we are doing but we must continue to enforce that. You must continue to abide by the protocol. You must provide them. The federal government has directed the reopening of Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in the country. Tertiary institution regulatory agencies like the National Universities Commission, NUC, National Commission for Colleges of Education, NCCE, and National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, have also directed tertiary institutions to reopen. The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, who addressed a press conference in Abuja, said the decision to reopen schools was sequel to review of COVID-19 situation in Nigeria, with the number of infections declining. “We have consulted widely with stakeholders in the sector including the Association of Private Schools, NAPPS, Provosts of Colleges of Education, Rectors of Polytechnics, Vice-Chancellors of Universities, State Governors, Commissioners of Education and development partners,” Adamu said. Adamu had also confirmed all unity schools will open by October 12.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has ordered the reopening of all schools in the country. This is after about six months of shutting down in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Adamu Adamu, the Minister of Education, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja. The minister further advised all schools to adhere to the guidelines for the reopening of schools. The minister said all unity schools should open by October 12 “while states and private schools will determine their own modalities of reopening.”

Real reason labour called off planned strike action – TUC

Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, has appealed to Nigerians not to lose faith in the organised labour. TUC Chairman in Lagos State, Gbenga Ekundayo, explained that the strike was halted to see what the government will come up with, in two weeks. To the chagrin of many citizens, TUC and the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, suspended the planned nationwide industrial action yesterday morning. This followed negotiations and agreements with the federal government. Ekundayo told journalists that the suspension would be reviewed afterwards “When labour leaders go into a negotiation, it is for a purpose, and when that purpose is not served, we press home the demands by withdrawing services of our members. “Our national leaders went into further negotiations last night, which lasted till the early hours of today. An understanding has been reached and the strike was called off,” he said.

We have not suspended strike – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has debunked speculations that its ongoing strike has been suspended. It made the clarification via its  Twitter handle   while reacting to #ASUUResumes trend on yesterday. According to the union, the report claiming that its members have resumed is false. “Contrary to speculations making the rounds in the social media that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has called off strike, nothing of such is true. “If we are going to call off our going strike, there is a process that will be followed and nothing of such has been done.” The President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, had vowed that the union would sustain its ongoing strike action until the Federal Government addresses all its demands. Shehu Sani reacts as Boko Haram attacks Borno Gov’s convoy, kills policemen, soldiers

Former Kaduna lawmaker, Shehu Sani has condemned the attack on Governor of Borno State’s convoy by Boko Haram. Journalists reported that the governor’s convoy was ambushed yesterday, shortly after leaving Monguno by suspected Boko Haram fighters at Kekano village. According to reports, 12 policemen, 13 civilians and 5 soldiers were confirmed dead from the attack. The incident occurred around 2pm while the convoy was heading to Baga town ahead of government’s plan to return internally displaced persons, IDPs, from Maiduguri to Baga The terrorists also seized and carted away one police armoured car, one gun truck belonging to the military and six government vehicles. Reacting to the attack, Sani advised Governor Zulum to exercise great caution in areas still under control by Boko Haram and be well protected.
