Budget size: N8.612 trillion (16 % higher than 2017 estimates) Expenditure Estimates The proposed aggregate expenditure of N 8.612 trillion (16 per cent above 2017 budget estimate) will comprise Recurrent Costs of N3.494 trillion Debt Service of N2.014 trillion Statutory Transfers of about N456 billion Sinking Fund of N220 billion (to retire maturing bond to local contractors) Capital Expenditure of N2.428 trillion (excluding the capital component of statutory transfers). Buhari proposes N8.6tr ‘Budget of Consolidation’

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday proposed a N8.612 trillion expenditure for next year. The “Budget of Consolidation” is a nominal increase of 16 per cent above this year’s estimate. The President told a joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives that the 2018 Budget will consolidate on the achievements of previous budgets and deliver on Nigeria’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) 2018 – 2020. The Federal Government presented a budget of N7.44 trillion for the outgoing year 2017.The President noted that in keeping with the government’s policy, 30.8 per cent (or N2.652 trillion) of aggregate expenditure (inclusive of capital in Statutory Transfers) has been allocated to the capital budget. The government, he said, expects fiscal operations to result in a deficit of N2.005 trillion or 1.77 percent of GDP. EFCC grills ex-Governor Idris Wada

For about seven and a half hours yesterday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) grilled a former Kogi State Governor Idris Wada in connection with the ongoing probe of N23billion poll bribery scandal. The poll bribery cash was facilitated by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison- Madueke. Wada was quizzed in respect of about N500million allocated to Kogi State. The anti-graft commission also quizzed a former acting Governor of Taraba State Sani Abubakar Danladi over another tranche of N450million bribe cash.It was unclear last night if the ex-governor had been released. An EFCC source said: “The ex-governor came to the EFCC at about noon on Monday for interrogation on the N500million allocated to the state. “Our detectives were able to show him some transactions and asked Wada to clarify a few things.” In a separate statement, the EFCC said it has also quizzed a former Acting Governor of Taraba State, Sani Abubakar Danladi. BVN: Banks that may suffer from deposit loss

The biggest casualties in terms of deposit loss should the Federal Government go-ahead to implement court order on funds forfeiture for Bank Verification Number (BVN) non-compliant accounts will be the first generation banks, The Nation has learnt. These set of banks, according to an industry source who spoke anonymously, seem to have the largest number of customers that have stayed with them for close to or over 100 years. Justice Dimgba Igwe of the Federal High Court, ruling on an ex parte application filed by the Federal Government through the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation on October 21, granted the temporary forfeiture of funds in accounts not linked to BVN within two weeks unless the owners justify their ownership of such accounts. The deadline for compliance ended yesterday. Kidnappers release monarch’s wife after collecting N2.5m

Noami, wife of Chief Tuesday Jumbo, the Clan Head of Obong, in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has been set free by her captors suspected to be kidnappers. Our correspondent learnt that Noami,  who was seized by suspected kidnappers numbering five near her country home,  Obio Edem Urua,  Etim Ekpo local government area,  about a week ago,  was freed after a whopping N2. 5m was paid as ransom. A source said the Monarch successfully negotiated with his wife’s abductors and agreed to part with N2. 5million to effect her release. The source disclosed that the kidnappers blindfolded and ferried the monarch’s wife from Ukwa Ngwa forest in the neighbouring Abia State and dropped her at Iwukem village, about 10 minutes drive to her palace iin Ibio Edem Urua.
