We Are Interested in Preventing Fire than Fighting it - Fire Service Boss

FFS personnel displaying professional skills during NPL working visit

Nigeria’s Federal Fire Service has indeed, grown beyond toddlerdom. This is evident in the giant strides recorded in the service in the last one and half years. The Comptroller-General of the Service, Dr. Liman Ibrahim was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in March 2019 and since then, the operations of the fire service have not remained the same. Worthy to note are the modern equipment and facilities put in place by the service, to improve fire fighting response and staff welfare.

The Controller-General, CG of the Federal Fire Service, FFS, Dr. Liman Ibrahim has reiterated the Federal Fire Service's commitment to controlling and preventing fire outbreaks in the country, as well as carrying out other rescue missions.

He gave the assurance during a working visit by the Nigerian Prize for Leadership, NPL 2021 ambassadors to the headquarters of the Fire Service in Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of the Director, the 2ic Officer in Charge of Inspection, Investigation, and Enforcement unit of the Service, DCF I.A Kurutsi emphasized the need for consistent enlightenment of Nigerians on why it's imperative to prevent fire outbreak rather than fighting it.

Federal Fire Service Under Dr. Liman Ibrahim

According to Kurutsi, the Federal Fire Service, under the current Fire Service CG and President Muhammadu Buhari has experienced tremendous changes and development as against what was obtained years back.

He noted that the fire service currently has over 140 modern fire fighting appliances distributed to all states of the federation, adding that the Service has also broadened its performances by establishing offices in all states of the federation and also looks forward to establishing offices in each of the 109 senatorial districts in the country, come 2022.

He added that the fire service has become a full-fledged organization, rendering varied rescue missions before, during, and after fire bout.

As part of efforts to restructure the Service, Kurutsi said that the service has been interacting and collaborating with international communities who help train its officers to improve the operations of the institution.

Road Users Slow Down Quick Response to Fire Outbreak

Meanwhile, Kurutsi condemned the attitudes of road users towards firefighters on highways during emergencies, as he emphasized the need for easy and quick access to fire outbreak locations to reduce the destruction of lives and properties.

He also encouraged organizations to have a source of water to make up for water shortages for firefighters during fire outbreaks.

"Federal Fire Service doesn't charge for putting out fire.

You can as well extinguish the fire before the arrival of fire service only if you have the fire extinguisher.

However, do not wait until the fire gets out of hands before you alert the fire service, endeavour to contact us on time", he urged.

At its worst, unlawful use of force by police can result in people being deprived of their right to life. If police force is unnecessary or excessive, it may also amount to torture or other ill-treatment. Unlawful force by police can also violate the right to be free from discrimination, the right to liberty and security, and the right to equal protection under the law.           In countries with high rates of killings by police, there is often a combination of factors including inadequate laws, racial or other forms of discrimination, insecurity or conflict, and entrenched impunity. Governments who routinely trample on other human rights like freedom of expression and peaceful assembly often a...
