The Contributions of Akin Rotimi to Ekiti Development

It is another great privilege for me as a youth leader in Ikole Local Government to appreciate one of our fantastic, brilliant and outstanding Sons; Akin Rotimi.

This axis have not had light for about 3 years since the last transformer got burnt.

Yesterday, Akin Rotimi donated a transformer to the Odo-Ayedun community, which cost about 4million naira. To clarify, this project was done solely as a personal initiative supported by his friends, and is remarkably different from other instances when public office holders facilitate government doing such projects.

Those who know Akin Rotimi know that the commendable transformer project is one of many things he has done in Ekiti state very quietly. He is a silent achiever who believes in impact and not noise. I was wondering why he decided not to talk or make media noise about all these impactful and life-touching projects. But then, I recall his kind of person, passion and commitment to human capital development without noise.

Last year, to commemorate his 10th wedding anniversary in October 2020, Akin Rotimi reached out to the General Hospital in Ikole-Ekiti through the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, for a list of 10 indigent patients on the waitlist for urgent medical interventions. With the support of friends and family, and the collaboration of health officials in the state, he surpassed the target and funded the surgeries of 15 cases of patients from across Ikole local government.

In 2019, through his non-profit organization, Ekiti Connect and in partnership with LEAP Africa, he single handedly funded an all expense paid 3-Day Leadership Training programme for over 100 Ekiti Youths. All participants were fed, and given quality conference materials free of charge.

Do you know that in the State, he has been one of the brains behind the activities of the current Governor, Dr John Fayemi since 2007 when they first met at a leadership conference outside Nigeria, and has since worked behind the scenes with him in the various positions including when Dr. Fayemi served as minister?

Surprisingly, when the governor returned in 2018, he chose to work behind the scenes and not take up any formal government position, until February 2021, when he was appointed to the state executive council as Special Adviser, Communications and Strategy. While he works to build the image of the government externally, within the party establishment and government, he is known as a very vocal critic with very strong opinions about how things should be done differently, and one of the few voices of reason and moderation in a highly sycophantic environment. The above attribute is unique and commendable.

There are many more records of Akin Rotimi’s impact in the community, following after the footsteps of his late father, Chief (Hon.) Akintunde ROTIMI, who was a second republic member of the National Assembly that represented Ekiti North.

He has always been deeply passionate about Ekiti causes, since he joined Ekiti Parapo, and started attending meetings at Airport Hotel Lagos at the age of 18.

People have alluded to the impact of this worthy son of Ekiti within just 4 months of joining the government, but those who truly know him, know he is consistent with his track record of achievements whether in government or out of government.

We are appreciative of this kind gesture and we pray God continue to bless and lift our dear Egbon. May your type multiply.

CITIZENS’ RIGHT AND POLICE INJUSTICE IN NIGERIA

By: Ebo Emmanuel             Police Injustice mostly used to refer to various human rights violations by police which might include beatings, racial abuse, unlawful killings, torture, or indiscriminate use of riot control agents at protests. At its worst, unlawful use of force by police can result in people being deprived of their right to life. If police force is unnecessary or excessive, it may also amount to torture or other ill-treatment. Unlawful force by police can also violate the right to be free from discrimination, the right to liberty and security, and the right to equal protection under the law.           In countries with high rates of killings by police, there is often a combination of factors including inadequate laws, racial or other forms of discrimination, insecurity or conflict, and entrenched impunity. Governments who routinely trample on other human rights like freedom of expression and peaceful assembly often a...

Individual Greed Responsible for Ekiti Current Sordid Realities - Oni

Engnr Segun Oni By: Williams Esan A former Governor of Ekiti State, Engnr. Segun Oni, has attributed the current sordid realities in the state to individual greed, incompetence, insensitivity and political dictatorship. The Elder Statesman made the disclosure while hosting the peoples' democratic party, PDP leaders across the state, at his residence in Ifaki-Ekiti. Engnr. Oni, who is also one of the Governorship aspirants under the umbrella of the PDP in the state's 2022 governorship poll, charged the good people of Ekiti state to rise up to their responsibilities  by speaking up, in order to put an end to the current narrative in the state. The former Governor also urged the people of the state to strongly kick against imposition of candidates, adding that incompetent individuals should not be allowed to pilot the affairs of the state no matter what. "It's high time Ekiti people embraced good governance and stop chasing shadows.  "No government operates from the ...
