REPORT OF AN INTERVIEW WITH FUOYE DEAN OF STUDENTS' AFFAIRS ON ISSUES RELATING TO THE INAUGURATION OF SUG AND IT ELECTION IN THE UNIVERSITY.

FUOYE Student Union: A constitutional precedence that cannot be averted ---ADEYEMI

 Esan Femi Williams

The inauguration of the Federal University, Oye – Ekiti student union has being described as a constitutional precedence, subjecting to the fact that necessity requires that Fuoye students should have a voice through which they can come together and present their demands.

This was disclosed by the Dean of Student’s Affairs, the person of Dr. E.O Adeyemi during an interview with the press in his office on Tuesday.

“I will not say that the granting of the student union is too early because constitutionally, they’ve been allowed to have a voice through which they can channel their grievances and demands to the school management without engaging themselves in any unruly act that may impede academic activities and progress of the school.

“Since we’ve allowed other unions like NASU, NAT, and ASUU, so, the students also need to have a voice.

“Well, I can’t ascertain the fact that the granting of the student union will help resolve the problems students are having with the school management, but, I think they now have a voice to present their demands to the school management.

“However, not all their demands can be met because we have limited resources. But, I think with that, there will be a means of dialogue to deliberate on what could be done to meet their demands,” he said.

Dr Adeyemi reinstated the management’s commitments towards reconstructing the road linking face two to face three, as he reigned praises on the management for a job well-done over the construction of the Ikole campus field.

“It is not that the school management don’t want to carry out projects that will benefit her students but diversity of demands has greatly affected the smooth delivery of the projects most importantly in the process of trying to balance everything up,” he affirmed.

Similarly, the DSA said that different measures had being put in place to making the election free and fair.

He said, “we need to give the aspirants proper orientation, organize retreat for the elected executives after induction outside the school environment so as to have proper understanding of what student unionism is all about.”

Finally, he said that he is expecting a dynamic executives and future leaders who will be able to lead and represent Fuoye students well and not the ones who are after their selfish aims and ambitions. He added that proper checkup will be done on the elected excos to ensure accountability and smooth delivery. Meanwhile, he advised the aspirants to accept the results of the forthcoming election whichever way it comes.

“It is a spirit of game! You win, thank God! You lose, thank God!. They should not turn it to another rancor. Rather, the loser should embrace the winner and work together to achieving their goals,” he said.
